Beyonce Dance For You Music Video / Rehearsal Choreography
Greeting Dance Breakers. A friend of the 4 PM Dance Break, Cakes, you may remember our interview with her several months ago, The Story of Cakes a Hip-Hop Diva sent us a new video of her newest work.
This got me to thinking, how do choreographers take their amazing skills and move to the next level. That's when I came across DanceBreak. The mission of the DanceBreak Foundation is to identify and nurture talented early and mid-career musical theater choreographers, and offer them an exceptional platform to showcase their work for an audience of industry leaders who can be most beneficial in advancing their careers. DanceBreak provides all the financial, administrative and technical support necessary to develop new choreographic talent for this uniquely American art form.
Each year, DanceBreak produces a series of presentations in New York City to showcase the work of emerging choreographers for an audience of producers, directors, artistic directors, writers, institutional managers and agents.
A group of six aspiring choreographers is selected from a nation-wide applicant pool, the applicants are reviewed and, after a preliminary screening of semi-finalists' reels, the finalists reels are seen and winners chosen by a esteemed Selection Committee with no bias towards race, ethnicity or gender.
In 2007 and 2008, more than 28 of the theatre’s foremost choreographers, directors and producers were part of the selection process, including choreographers Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, La Cage Aux Folles and Legally Blond), Kathleen Marshall ( On the Town, Pajama Game, Grease), Rob Ashford ( Thoroughly Modern Millie and Curtains, Cry Baby, Promises, Promises),directors Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, Henry IV, The Coast of Utopia), John Rando ( Urinetown), Michael Mayer ( Spring Awakening) and Jason Moore ( Avenue Q, Shrek), choreographer Larry Fuller (Evita),composer Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Wicked), producers Kevin McCollum (Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights), Jack Viertel ( Jersey Boys, Spring Awakening, Encores! Vortex Park Private Concert
Happy Saturday Dance Breakers. The 4 PM Dance Break was asked by Vortex Park to interview them for a promotional documentary they are producing. It was so much fun to spend time and get to know better one of our favorite bands.
We spent time at Black Box ATL shooting the intro to the film and then spent some time at The 5 Spot in Little Five Points in Atlanta shooting the interview. Friday took us back to Black Box where the guys held an intimate concert for about 25 of their die hard fans and the 4 PM Dance Break was right there in the mix.
Vortex Park played an amazing set for about an hour and a half. We even go to hear some never before heard songs We also had an opportunity to interview some of the VP fans to find out why they love VP. The most common answer, the unique sound of the group, this crazy gypsy rock sound that really can't be defined as gypsy rock.
This band is well on their way. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with the guys on this project. As soon as the film is done we will share it with all of you here on The 4 PM Dance Break.
In the mean time you can check out their videos
Bee Sting
and
Through A Hole
If you want to hear more of Vortex Park. Visit the Vortex Park website and hear Follow the Elephant in it's entirety for free.

Vortex Park Release Party
Saturday night in East Atlanta the roads are pretty empty in this part of town. Mostly loft apartments and condos, some industrialized areas and a few small bars. As I pull down Krog st more of the same. a Lone street lamp on and a midsized warehouse space on the corner. Pretty unassuming. As I pulled closer I notice lights flashing from outside the building. Even closer I see people hanging out in front of the ware house and ever nearer still, the thump of the drums inside like and elephant stomping through the jungle, I had arrived. I followed the sounds of the elephant inside the building as we greeted at the door and given my pass to go inside.
The Vortex Park CD Release party was great. An amazing crowd of loyal followers mixed with newbies who were jammin' out to the gypsy, cosmic vibe of Vortex Park. After being there for a few minuets, a cute little blond came up to me, she had this impish smile. "Excuse me, you look like you know how to dance." (Please note she made this statement because I was at the time dancing and it had nothing to do with the fact that I am black, OK maybe a little. ) she continued "would you like to dance?" What kind of Dance Breaker would I be if I did not take the opportunity to dance. And so we did.
Vortex Park closed out their first set with a new song off the album called Yellow Flowers. I'm loving the new stuff from the guys. This is an album you want to put in your car CD player and head on a road trip with two of your crazy friends.
During the intermission, I had a chance to talk with some of the folks who were there to talk with the band. There was so much going on with the drinking of the Terrapin and the cigarettes. I meet some interesting folks, including a singer who just moved here from Seattle.
The second set started strong giving us a much more jammin' version of Bee Sting and some Gypsy Metropolis. It was a great night. The guys were great as always. Can't wait to hear what's next. Insider sources tell us there are already three new songs in the works. Keep it coming VP.
There it is, the elephant.

The Story of Cakes, a Dance Diva part 2
Yesterday we introduce dance breakers to Samantha “Cakes Huggins. Backup dancer for R& B group Bell Biv Devoe and Founder and owner of Decatur dance studio Project S.L.I.D.E.
The work that Sam does with Project S.L.I.D.E is truly amazing. She is working with young girls & boys and getting them active, motivated and confident.
Sam is able to bring in guest artist to her studio to do work shop performances. Not many Atlanta Studios can say they have backup dancer for Beyonce in studio working with their kids. Project S.L.I.D.E can and they do it with no bravado. Sam is working hard to give teens a chance to shine.
So what does the future hold for this Renaissance woman? “I would love to dance with Chris Brown, Ciara, Ne-yo and Prince although I might have to have more of an edge to dance with him like dying my hair platinum blonde or something…lol. You see my style of dance is more old-school urban hip-hop.” We think Cakes has plenty of edge and plenty of talent to dance with the best of them. Even as we sat in this interview she would bust out a move or two in the chair. This girl is on fire!
Now for the fun stuff we wanted to know who Cakes is dancing to when not on stage or in class. “Of course anything Michael Jackson related will get me going. I love Chris Browns Deuces. I wore my boy friend out playing Aaliyah’s Rock the boat. My mood changes, so it just depends on how I'm feeling. But I can dance to and love almost anything produced by Timbaland. At the end of the day I just love good music
Finally, we had to know what your favorite BBD song is. “Poison, when we get up on stage and they first notes start playing. You can feel the history and timelessness of the song. The crowd’s excitement and passion for the songs makes me feel like I’m dancing to Thriller. This is the song they came to see, so you better not mess up… lol.”
Thanks to Sam for spending time with the 4 PM Dance break. She truly is a delight and fantastic energy about her. Project S.L.I.D.E has a recital coming up on May 1 on the 2nd stage at the 14th Street playhouse.

The Story of Cakes, a Hip-Hop Dance Diva
Everyone has a story, and dancer and diva Samantha "Cakes" Huggins is no different. O.K. maybe a little different.
Sam Huggins has worked in Atlanta's arts and music scene for several years. What you may not know about Sam or "Cakes" as her friends call her is she is one of Atlanta's best kept secret.
Monday through Friday Sam Huggins spends her day working with several arts organizations and come Friday night Sam is, in her words, "Taking off my coat, throwing on my earrings and getting all diva'd out."
Why the superman change? Sam Huggins is a backup dancer for 90's R& B group Bel Biv Devoe. "Most people I work with have no idea what I do. I have sort kept it on the DL."
It all started three years ago when she booked a summer tour with BBD on their Ladies Night tour. The tour included Dru Hill and Keith Sweat. That 3 month tour turned into a three year gig all the while Sam kept her humble life here in Atlanta "I'm blessed to work with such a legendary group. Their music is timeless."
One day your talking with parents about the progress of their children and the next night you popin' and lockin' in Vegas and chillin' with artists like Montell Jordan, Salt & Pepa and Doug E. Fresh
Working with such legendary talent has given Cakes some perspective on the music industry and the fame game. We asked Sam what she thought of all the YouTube sensations that merged recently. "I'm old school. I went to school for dance and I hustled to get to where I am. I'm cool with it as long as their are talented. Like Justin Bieber. I took the kids from my studio to see his movie premiere and I was like this kid is really talented he can play the drums and everything.
Did we forget to mention that on top of working a full time job and doing world-wind U.S. tour on the weekends Samantha "Cakes" Huggins is also founder and owner of Project S.L.I.D.E. ,
S.L.I.D.E stands for Saving Lives in Dance Education. "Dancing kept me out of trouble growing up. Boys would call me and I would tell them. Sorry I can't (go out with you tonight) I'm dancing tonight. You know how it is, a dancer can't be pregnant so if you ruin this it's going to be a problem. So I was extra cautions and determined to stay out of trouble and focused on dance.
The mission of project S.L.I.D.E. is clear, offer professional dance training for today's youth in a safe and nurturing environment. It's for ages 8-17 and is a hip hop based program but will offer a variety of dance styles. Dance will be used as a form of therapy and to inspire today's youth to be better citizens.
With teen crimes and pregnancies being at an all time high let's bring back the days when you were so involved that you didn't have time to be influenced by the negative issues that our teens our faced with today! Our instructors are passionate about dance and teaching, that is why our staff is strategically chosen because the growth, development, and safety of our students is PRIORITY!
Tomorrow's dance break will look more at Project S.L.I.D.E, Sam's thoughts on the future and her favorite dance break.

Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me
We have been grooving to the song for weeks. The video is not my favorite that Britney has done nor is the song to be honest, but both are fun in a cliche sort of way. Till the next big break keep dancing.

When I say Bring it, You say On!
Greetings Dance Breakers. Today I thought I would cross the line of my normal format to tell you about an amazing production I was fortunate enough to see yesterday. Bring It On: The Musical. Yes I said Bring it On:The Musical. Before you start scoffing about competitive cheerleading coming to the stage. Take a look at the creative team who put together this amazing show.
Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA has certainly brought it with amazing team. Now the Alliance is no stranger to working with big name Broadway talent. The Alliance has launched the World Premieres of AIDA, The Color Purple, Come Fly with Me and many others.
Now to the fun part. You have an amazing creative team, a top notch theatre, so now all that's missing is a cast who can sing, act, dance, and cheer. This show required more then just your normal triple theaters. The team had to find quadruple threats or at least turn dancers in to cheerleaders and vise verse. Take a look.
The show is still in the preview stages so some small changes are still being made. Let me tell you if you are in or around the Atlanta area this is a show to see. If you are a fan of the movie I think you will love this production. It is not based on any of the movies and is it's own story but has some glimpses of familiarity. The choreography and stunt work is great. The mix of hip-hop, pop and rap will have dance breakers on their feet. While we can't show any scenes from the show. We do have a behind-the-scenes video from rehearsals of Bring It On:The Musical.
Honestly, I can not say enough about this production. If you have never been to the Alliance Theatre, if you have never seen a World Premiere Musical, if you've never seen Bring It On, what are you waiting for?
For realsies, put your bitter bitch barbie down and go see Bring it On The Musical at the Alliacne Theatre
